Post-Course Reflection

          Throughout my life writing has never really been a strongpoint for me. I feel this way because personally I don’t like analyzing and writing pages about a boring book. When the assignment resembles this one I find it hard to find a topic and write a thorough analysis essay. However this class was different because we were able to write about events that actually happened in our lives, and for me that is a lot easier. Since I have enjoyed what I wrote I was able to better learn how to convey my ideas by “showing” and not “telling”.

            I feel that the best piece I have written this semester has been “Angel Undercover”, which was a biography essay in which I described the effect that my Uncle had on me. I think that it was my best piece because I feel that I created very vivid images of him, and was able to successfully portray his effect on me. I thought that this essay was easy to write because of how much he means to me. That is why I feel that my worst essay of the year was the multi-genre essay that we had to write. It was my worst essay because I was really not attached to what I was writing and felt it to be boring to have to analyze the texts. I feel that the connections that I made between books weren’t substantial enough and I didn’t have enough evidence from the text. However I did enjoy the outside reading project because I was able to choose a book that was interesting to me, A Million Little Pieces by James Frey. This assignment really turned me on to how relaxing and exhilarating reading a good book can be, and have began to read on a regular basis now.

            I thought that this was a very beneficial and well taught class. However there were a few things that I didn’t enjoy in this class. Firstly I felt that the journal entries in the beginning of the semester was just busy work and really didn’t help us in anyway along our path to writing the essays. I would strongly suggest this class to every single student because regardless of how good of a write you are this class can make you better.

            After taking this class I feel that I am a more confident writer and am now better able to convey my points. Also I learned how to pick a topic and formulate an essay around it. No longer do I despise writing, now I can just sit and get it done. Therefore I feel that this class was very beneficial because writing is something that I will have to do for the rest of my life.
